To Stand or not to stand: That is the dilemma.

We see many patients a day who complain of neck, shoulder and/or back pain - and without stereotyping, many of them are office workers.

These symptoms are often not related to any other condition, making our life difficult in diagnosing your condition, but also making your life difficult because we seem to get nowhere with treatment.

Longer working hours, more workplace demands and increasing workloads have added to the increase of more chronic and stubborn ‘injuries’. Posture has been well documented in relation to chronic pain and degenerative necks, backs and general spines. Many patients are adamant they focus on their posture, and correct it constantly throughout the day - but over an 8-10 hour period is this really possible?

Over the last few years there has been an increasing trend towards implementing stand up desks in office places.

So are sit - stand desks the way of the future?

Sit stand desks offer the best of both worlds, helping you to work how you want whilst providing a healthy alternative to sitting all day. One of the key features of this option is the ability to change between sitting & standing positions so that you can sit down for periods of time during the day, as standing for long periods is also detrimental to your well-being.

Studies have shown there are a number of reasons why sitting at your desk all day can be detrimental to your health.

Now, working upright isn’t only for people with bad backs. Pretty much everyone is killing themselves by sitting down all day and we — as a working culture — need to make a change. There are standing desks, treadmill desks, gas lift desks - so in other words a lot of different options available. A simple stand-up desk is probably the best choice for most people — it isn’t as costly (or as exotic) as something like a treadmill desk. You can also use it while sitting down which is important.

Making the change could save or at least, extend, your life.

The biggest thing to remember - especially in big office places is that people all over the office will be able to see your screens. Remember that (seriously, remember that).

Once you give up sitting you’ll always wonder why you didn’t do so sooner.
